The American Mideast Coalition of Democracy (“AMCD”) congratulates all who celebrate Nowruz (Persian: نوروز Nowruz, [nouˈɾuːz]; literally “new day”), which occurs on the Spring equinox every year. Our congratulations extend to nearly 300 million people worldwide. Nowruz has been celebrated for over 3000 years by many diverse communities, ethnicities, races and religions in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, and the Balkans.
Nowruz is proclaimed as an official UN observance because it promotes peace and solidarity, particularly in families and focuses on reconciliation and neighborliness, contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities, races and religions.
AMCD’s Vice Chair, Hossein Khorram, an ethnic Iranian explains, “Nowruz is a celebration of the renewal of nature, when winter gives way to spring and darkness gives way to light; and a victory for the spirit of the sun, as it begins to gather strength and overcome the cold and gloom winter.”
May this year bring about the triumph of hope over fear for all those who celebrate Nowruz.
