AMCD Offers Support for Kabylia Gov’t in Exile

December 15, 2025

Yesterday, December 14th, the Kabylia government in exile in France, led by  President Ferhat Mehenni, proclaimed the independence of the Berber region of Kabyle in Algeria. The Movement for Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK) is pursuing its goals through non-violent methods by appealing to the international community and to international law. The MAK controls no territory, and this announcement was purely symbolic, but nevertheless it demonstrates a longing for political autonomy among a significant North African minority, the Berbers, whose language and culture has been repressed for centuries.

“The distinctive Berber culture and language have been repressed since the Arab Conquests of the seventh century,” said AMCD co-chair, Tom Harb. “The fact that they have held on to their language and culture all this time is a testament to their resilience and fortitude.”

“At the very least, the Berbers of Kabylia should be supported in their claim to autonomy due to the simple fact that they are using non-violent means to achieve their goals,” added AMCD co-chair John Hajjar. “A non-violent political movement is a rare thing in that part of the world. We salute them for their bravery.”

AMCD stands with the persecuted and repressed minorities in the Middle East, and we lend our encouragement and support to the Berber people and the MAK of Algeria.

  1. It is time for the berber people rooted in the
land of Saint Augustin (berber himself) regain their land and their liberty.
